Dear Members,
For those who are teaching in schools, I hope you have had an enjoyable and productive term. We have just entered a new MLTAWA membership year and as we have now reduced our grace period for lapsed membership from six to two months, I urge you to renew your membership as soon as possible.
MLTAWA membership entitles you to automatic membership of the Australian Federation of Modern Languages Teachers Association (AFMLTA), which provides national level support to seeking curriculum and assessment provisions for language teaching. The AFMLTA is currently responding to the draft NSW K-10 Languages Framework and we anticipate similar involvement with the WA P-10 Curriculum for Languages in the near future. The MLTAWA has recently approached the School Curriculum and Standards Authority seeking the opportunity to consult and review the Western Australian Curriculum for Languages prior to the release of the six syllabi for French, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Italian and German and we are currently awaiting a response. MLTAWA membership also entitles eligibility to nominate/be nominated for the MLTAWA Principal’s Award and the MLTAWA Hilde Dixon Award. Information about these two awards and nomination forms can now be accessed on our website.
One of the first things the MLTAWA would like to do in this membership year is survey all members on their thoughts and opinions about current issues in Languages education, as well as gauge the areas of needs. A Working Party will meet to formulate and administer such as survey during the first few weeks of Term 2. If you would like to be part of this Working Party, please contact me as soon as possible.
Financial members of the MLTAWA will soon be invited to join the new MLTWA Facebook group. This is a closed group used as a place to discuss, debate and share information and resources regarding language teaching and learning in Western Australia. Participation in this group is an optional membership benefit – members will not miss out on formal communications from the MLTAWA if they do not join this Facebook group. For further enquiries regarding this Facebook group, please contact [email protected] .
A big thank you to MLTAWA members who have already renewed their membership for 2016-17 and a warm welcome to new members. And for those that have them…. Happy holidays!!!
Warm regards,
Kate Reitzenstein
