A message from the MLTAWA President
Welcome to the September edition of our MLTAWA newsletter. As we approach the end of Djilba, I am continually amazed by the dedication and passion of our Languages teaching community. Together, we are not only teaching languages but also nurturing the cultural connections and diversity that make our classrooms vibrant and enriching for all students.
This past month has been an important one for us as an association. We continue to work towards elevating the teaching and learning of Languages across Western Australia, and we value the input from all of you in shaping this journey. With the final term of the year ahead, we have exciting opportunities for professional learning and community building, and I hope to see many of you at our upcoming events.

MLTAWA Response to the TISC Discussion Paper
Earlier this month, MLTAWA submitted its response to the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) Discussion Paper. We believe that our collective voice is crucial in advocating for the place of Languages within tertiary entrance processes. We emphasised the importance of retaining and promoting Languages as a key part of the ATAR curriculum, ensuring they remain accessible and supported at all levels.
Our submission highlighted the value of linguistic diversity in enhancing cognitive development, intercultural understanding, and global competency for students. We are committed to continuing this dialogue with TISC and other stakeholders to secure a strong future for Languages Education in Western Australia. Thank you to all members who contributed their insights and expertise.

2024 Regional Grant Winner's Conference Report
This year, I had the privilege of attending the MLTAWA conference, thanks to the generous regional grant. The experience was both inspiring and deeply impactful, beginning with Sharon Gregory's beautiful Welcome to Country. Hearing the Noongar language spoken so eloquently, alongside Sharon’s personal story, set a heartfelt and inclusive tone for the entire event.
Throughout the conference, it was encouraging to learn that over 40 languages are being taught across Western Australia, fostering multicultural communities and strengthening connections among diverse groups.
One of the standout sessions for me was presented by Moya McLauchlan on Games for Practising Speaking. One particular strategy Moya shared really resonated with me—our names hold deep meaning, creating space for listening and connection. In an activity where participants threw a yarn while sharing the meanings of their names, we wove a web of stories and identities. I found this to be a powerful way for students to honor their names, cultures, and identities in the classroom.
Attending the conference surrounded by such talented and passionate Languages teachers was truly motivating. I left feeling inspired and more determined than ever to bring fresh ideas into my classroom. I will definitely be back next time!
