MLTAWA 2024 State Conference

Our much-anticipated MLTAWA State Conference “Advancing Languages Education: Bridging Cultures, Connecting Communities” is just two short weeks away. We have curated an exciting and comprehensive 2-day program of presentations, which you can explore HERE. The conference will feature three interstate speakers who will deliver keynote addresses, providing their unique perspectives on this year’s theme.

Held at the centrally located Novotel Perth Langley Hotel, the Conference offers a brilliant opportunity to network with colleagues and explore the latest resources and information to enhance our teaching practice.

We have planned a variety of general sessions as well as language-specific presentations. The schedule includes eight concurrent sessions with four presentations each, totalling 32 sessions over the two days. These sessions will cover primary and secondary contexts in a mix of lecture and workshop styles. This year, we are fortunate to have presentations from teachers of Italian, Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, and Indonesian, among others. Highlights include a high tea with a lively panel debate and the presentation of the Principal’s Award—truly something for everyone.

Attendance is open to members and non-members, so please spread the word. The more participants we have, the more we all gain from this much-anticipated event. At just $395 for MLTAWA members, this is great value. Even if you can’t attend on Friday, Day 1 of the Conference, you can still join us for the High Tea and awards ceremony. Register separately for the High Tea via the website.

Congratulations to Allexa Cernotta, the winner of the MLTAWA Regional Grant!

Movie Winners

Congratulations to all the winners of movie double passes over the last few weeks. A big thank you to Luna Palace Cinema for their wonderful generosity.

NZALT Conference

During the holidays, as President of MLTAWA, I had the honour of representing us at the joint NZALT Conference and FIPLV (The Fédération Internationale des Professeurs de Langues Vivantes) World Congress. I co-presented a session highlighting the importance of the work of MLTAWA and other LTAs across Australia. The session was well attended, including by the AFMLTA Executive and FIPLV Executive members. I also presented a session on increasing student participation in spoken activities in the classroom which was highly acclaimed. Many international teachers requested a copy of the paper that was published in *Babel* last year. I made many important connections during the National Assembly and four-day conference, which will benefit us in the coming years.

Support for Spanish Teachers in Australia

Earlier this year, the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in Australia, in collaboration with the Junta de Castilla y León (Spain), RMIT University, representatives from universities, and Spanish teachers’ associations in the country, held its 2nd National Conference of Spanish Language Teaching in Australia. Spanish teachers from across Australia gathered at RMIT University in Melbourne to share knowledge, experiences, and tools, and to reflect on the teaching of the Spanish language in the country. This event, which takes place in a different Australian state every two years, aims to become a reference for teachers of Spanish at all levels.

For more information on this and other initiatives, including support for Spanish teachers through human and material resources, please contact the Spanish Education Advisory Office in Melbourne at asesoriamelbourne,[email protected] or visit [their website](https://www.educacionfpydeportes.gob.es/australia/portada.html).
