People of MLTAWA

Each month, we will be introducing one of our Committee Members. This month, we asked a few questions to our President, Marisa Schiavi
Marisa Schiavi - President
What would you call a life changing moment in your life?
I suppose the moment that truly changed my life is the moment when I met my husband. I left Argentina at the age of 20 and went travelling to explore new languages and cultures for what was meant to be only a short while.
One ordinary afternoon I walked into a pub in London looking for a casual job and my husband was standing behind the bar. He asked me to fill in an application form and after a few quick questions I had a job. It turned out that he was the Manager and became my boss (that didn’t last long!).
Since then we have travelled the world and have lived in various countries including Greece, France, Spain, Italy, Argentina and Costa Rica. We now have two beautiful children who like to call themselves “global citizens born in Australia”.
When did you know that teaching was your calling?
I don’t think that there was a specific moment in time when I realised that teaching was my calling. It was rather about often gravitating towards situations where I would find myself supporting others in one way or another. Of course, when I decided to become a teacher it was clear that I would specialise in Languages and EAL/D!
What is your favourite quote / motto?
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
It is a quote by Nelson Mandela and it really speaks to me as a big part of my personal and professional commitment in working towards ensuring equitable access to education for all students but, particularly, for students from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds.
I strongly believe that if we are to live in a truly inclusive and plurilingual society, we must ensure languages have the place they deserve in education and this starts with supporting, maintaining and developing home languages in the first place as well as utilising the power of linguistic diversity in our schools to develop rich and diverse learning environments.
