People of MLTAWA

Each month, we will be introducing one of our Committee Members. This month, we asked a few questions to our Immediate Past President, Helen Kuehs

Helen Kuehs - Immediate Past President

Please tell us a bit about your background

Born in the wildflower season of Kambarang and growing up in the wheatbelt on Ballardong land, my childhood memories are of flat land, hot, dry and dusty. This is in stark contrast to where I was to settle as a young adult, in the snow covered mountains of Austria. It was here I became bilingual and where I would spend the next sixteen years of my life, first working as a snow ski instructor then raising three children. Over the next decade, after returning to Western Australia in the mid-nineties and hanging up my skis, I completed a Bachelor of Arts(English), Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Master of Education before settling in as a Languages specialist teacher with the Department of Education. I achieved Level 3 Classroom Teacher status in 2020.

What would you call a life changing moment in your life?

I think when I was learning to snow ski, my first snowplough was life changing. After careering down the icy slopes totally out of control several times, the sense of excitement at mastering a new skill and being in control was very exhilarating. Life can sometimes get out of control on various levels and really, all it takes is the ability to stop and look around you in wonderment, before continuing on life’s journey.

What is your favourite quote?

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” and I strongly believe that we can bring about change by our very actions. I joined the MLTAWA committee at a time when the Languages learning area was under threat. Collectively, we were able to advocate strongly and successfully for a mandated Languages curriculum. Change starts with each and every individual doing their little bit toward a brighter future.
