A message from the MLTAWA President

Dear Members

Marisa is on her way to represent MLTAWA at the AFMLTA National Assembly in Sydney and sends her best regards to you all. At the National Assembly Marisa will report on what has been happening in Western Australia and also find out what the rest of our nation has been up to in the field of Languages education.

This collaboration is vital in maintaining strong links with other states and territories and we are grateful to the AFMLTA for bringing everyone together. We look forward to hearing the news from the National Assembly upon Marisa’s return.

In the meantime, we are all getting very excited for the MLTAWA State Conference on the 29th and 30th July 2022. The draft program has been released and you will see the fantastic keynotes and sessions that are on offer. We hope many of you can attend and benefit from this conference.

Networking is a major part of every conference and it is always a great opportunity to share the experience with other Languages teachers in your department. Please encourage friends and colleagues to attend and register HERE.

Please remember, you can claim your conference fees as a tax deduction and you can use the professional learning hours toward your Teacher Registration Board requirements.
For now, enjoy the rest of your holidays and stay safe and warm, and on behalf of the MLTAWA committee, we look forward to welcoming you at the conference.

Kindest regards
Helen Kuehs
Immediate Past President

State Conference Update

Just three short weeks away we are holding the MLTAWA state conference “Shifting Paradigms in Languages Education”. We have a very full and exciting 2-day program of presentations which you can find HERE. We have three interstate speakers, who will be providing keynote addresses providing their perspectives on this year’s theme.

The conference will be held in the beautiful surrounds of Joondalup Resort and provides a brilliant opportunity to network with colleagues and stock up on the latest resources and information to enhance our teaching practice.

There will be a variety of general sessions as well as language specific and single language association symposiums. The concurrent sessions will cover primary and secondary contexts in a mixture of lecture and workshop styles.

This year we are fortunate to have presentations from teachers of Arabic, Greek, Chinese, and Hindi just to name a few. There will be a high tea with a lively panel debate and the presentation of the Principal’s Award. Truly something for everyone.

Attendance is open to members and non-members so please spread the word, the more participants we have, the more we all gain from this much anticipated event. For just $350 for two days for MLTAWA members, this is great value.

With my warmest regards,
Colleen Barclay
Vice President MLTAWA

People of MLTAWA

Each month, we will be introducing one of our Committee Members. This month, we asked a few questions to our Committee Member, Wida Harding.

Hello! I am Wida Harding and I am looking forward to meeting you all at our upcoming State conference 2022. If you have not register, please do not miss out on this exciting event and relevant discussion topics for this year.

Please tell us a little about your background

I graduated from Edith Cowan University, and I currently teach Bahasa Indonesia to the Pre-Primary to Year Six students at St Simon Peter CPS. I have a good wealth of experience working within the primary education in Perth and I have been blessed for the opportunity to be inclusive in my language teaching which I love dearly, and it has been an absolute joy.

Prior to teaching, I was an Australian trained chef in Western Australia, and I have held a position as a Tour and Travel Coordinator in Jakarta, Indonesia.

I believe that it is not a coincidence that I have accumulated my past life experiences to achieve what I have been dreaming of for decades to fulfill what it has been written for my future life. In the busyness of life, I have always made time to reconnect and visit my Indonesian family and friends as well as supporting them during difficult time.

What do you enjoy doing?

My adventurous travelling in nature Indonesia has been my greatest incentive to entice students’ motivation, curiosity, and engagement in my language teaching. I enjoy cooking Indonesian food, making traditional Jamu (herbal drinks) and travelling.

Terima kasih.

Salam hangat selalu,

Wida
