Nathan Harvey

Local, National & International Languages Leader

Nathan Harvey was a towering figure in Languages Education. At the time of his unexpected passing in September 2023 he was the leader of the biggest team of Languages teachers in WA, having raised and invigorated the program at Willetton Senior High School from his appointment as teacher of Japanese through to promotions to Head of Languages and Associate Principal.

In the same period, Nathan contributed to the wider community of Languages teachers through his work in the MLTAWA, including as Treasurer, and in the AFMLTA of which he became President for 2020-2022.

Nathan was well known and highly respected both nationally and internationally for his significant contributions to Languages Education. He consistently advocated for and promoted the importance of language learning, and championed language learners and teachers across all levels of schooling. Nathan made enduring, optimistic connections with all who worked and learned with him. This scholarship will extend those language-learning connections to future language learners and teachers.

2026 Scholarship recipient Ms Molly Jones

Molly Jones, a Japanese student at Georgiana Molloy Anglican School is the deserving winner. She had this to say about winning.

My language learning journey began with curiosity in a small town, but it has since become a defining part of who I am. With resilience, determination and a sincere passion for Japanese, I have pursued every opportunity available to me, no matter how difficult.

This scholarship represents more than financial support – it represents a chance to continue striving towards my dream of using language to build a more connected, inclusive world.
