The MLTAWA Languages Live – Statewide Reading Time and Competition is a new initiative that will allow metro and regional schools to come together to celebrate our multicultural society through Languages. And the best part of it is that the event will be held live every year!
The competition will consist of a short reading in Language followed by a live quiz. Groups of four students will be selected for each language by their teacher to represent the school. However, we encourage the whole school to watch the event live and cheer their Languages Team on as they compete!
Who can participate?
All WA Schools with a Languages Program and with a teacher who is an MLTAWA member will be able to register their school.
What year levels are eligible?
There will be two eligible groups:
1x Years 5-6
1x Years 7-10
Teachers will need to select four students who will represent their school. It is recommended that teachers select students from a range of year levels and not all from the same year.
What languages can participate?
Schools with Languages Programs in any of the following languages will be eligible to participate: Italian, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, Spanish, Greek, Hindi and Arabic. Availability for each language to be a part of this competition is subject to having a minimum of two teams able to compete with each other and subject to having a quiz maker available. We will confirm languages on offer for 2023 on September 1st.
How do we register?
Registrations will open on July 17th, 2023.

Who else can watch the MLTAWA Languages Live Competition?
We encourage the whole school to watch their Languages Team and reading live and come together during this 30-minute live competition to celebrate Languages in Western Australia.
When will the competition take place?
The competition will take place live on Friday September 15th from 9.00 AM to 9.25 AM for Primary Schools and 9.35 AM to 10.00 AM for Secondary Schools. Please make sure you and your team are available on this day before registering for the competition. Schools are encouraged to enjoy the reading time and watch the competition live as a whole school.
Videos of the winning submissions may be screened at future MLTAWA events and/or posted on the MLTAWA website, MLTAWA YouTube channel and the MLTAWA Facebook page.
All competition submissions are bound by the Languages in the Mainstream competition Terms and Conditions.
