Intensive Seminar for Teachers – Japan Foundation, Sydney (jpf.org.au)

WHAT IS THE INTENSIVE SEMINAR FOR TEACHERS?

The seminar, held at The Japan Foundation, Sydney enables teachers to develop language skills, gain confidence using Japanese, and to develop language teaching strategies and skills which they can apply in their own classrooms. Specific focuses include Australian Curriculum, brushing up Japanese language skills and culture workshops. Participants will be immersed in a Japanese language environment suited to their level and will have ample opportunity for networking.

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

This PD is relevant to Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership Limited (AITSL), Australian Professional Standards for Teachers standard descriptors 2.1, 2.6, 6.2, 7.4 (Proficient teacher career stage).

UPCOMING SEMINAR INFORMATION

Date:  September 26-29, 2022 (2022 SEP) 

Target:

  • Australian teachers of primary levels K-Y6 (teachers of Y7-8 may apply) or New Zealand teachers of primary levelsY1-8 (teachers of Y9-10 may apply).
  •  Australian pre-service teachers who are currently studying in the final year of their teaching course in university towards being a primary school level Japanese teacher in Australia, or have graduated from a teaching course on a primary school level in Australia within the past two years and be actively seeking teaching work.

[NOTE] Due to COVID-19 circumstances, there is a possibility that this seminar might be cancelled.

Timeline:

  • July 11, 2022:  Applications open
  • August 8, 2022: Deadline for application submission
  • August 8, 2022: If less than 10 applications, the seminar will be cancelled
  • August 22, 2022: Application outcome notification
  • August 29, 2022: Successful applicants to confirm their places
  • August 29, 2022: If less than 10 participants, the seminar will be cancelled
  • September 12, 2022: Deadline for Pre-task submissions

Starting and finishing times:

  • Starting time: 9:30am on September 26, 2022(Monday)
  • Finishing time: 12:30pm on September 29, 2022 (Thursday)

WHO CAN APPLY FOR UPCOMING SEMINAR (2022 SEP) ?

***As a result of revisions made to our previous eligibility criteria, participants who have attended in Intensive Seminars with the last three years are now eligible to attend.***

Teachers must:

  • be an Australian teacher of primary levels K-Y6 (teachers of Y7-8 may apply) or a
    New Zealand teacher of primary levels Y1-8 (teachers of Y9-10 may apply).
  • be currently teaching Japanese a minimum of 3 hours per week.
  • not be a native or near-native Japanese.
  • be able to read Hiragana and Katakana without any difficulty.
  • be at least JLPT N5 level of Japanese language proficiency. JLPT sample site here: http://www.jlpt.jp/e/samples/forlearners.html
  • be able to attend each day in full.

Pre-Service Teachers must:

  • be currently studying in the final year of their teaching course in university towards being a
    primary school level Japanese teacher in Australia, or have graduated from a teaching course
    on a primary school level in Australia within the past two years and be actively seeking
    teaching work.
  • not be a native or near-native Japanese speaker.

IS THERE A SEMINAR FEE?

  • There is no participation fee for this seminar.
  • All travel costs (i.e. transport and accommodation) are the participant’s responsibility.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Please follow the below steps to apply online:
  1. Print out Form 1 (Handwritten Task) → Fill out by hand → Scan → Save as PDF
  2. Download Form 2 (Self-evaluation lists) → Fill out (typing is allowed) → Save as Word format
  3. Fill out Online Application form → Upload FORM 1 &2
  4. Submit by August 8, 2022 (for 2022 SEP)

*Your application will only be accepted when both Forms 1 and 2 are uploaded.
